ELLE LAID ON HER BACK in the dark, listening to the aggressive whine of her space heater, and begged her mind to go anywhere but to the coffee shop and her conversation with Brett. They had spent nearly two hours just chatting like friends, like they’d known each other for years. It was easy and felt normal. Natural. In fact, they could have continued talking if Amber hadn’t called and pulled Brett away after finally remembering she had a fiance.

Elle refused to think about how comfortable she felt with him, how talking to him was as easy as walking through a doorway, how she’d laughed more in those two hours than she had in months. She didn’t think about how her face would redden when he’d look at her with his brown eyes as deep as a chasm or how she felt, for the first time, like she could be herself without ridicule.

She frowned and rolled to her side.

No. This was all kinds of wrong and Elle was not about to get tangled up in a love story that already had too many players.

Oh but you’re already tangled up, her mind cooed at her. Your heart is already a knot of feelings over Mr. Wonderful.

“But he’s not my Mr. Wonderful,” she muttered to herself and somehow was still surprised by the fact that saying it aloud hurt. She pressed her face into the crook of her arm and groaned. What a mess. Here she was, longing after a pair of brown eyes while Brett’s blonde-haired, blue-eyed baby was off picnicking with someone else.

She should tell him. As much as it would hurt him, he deserved to know, deserved to have that truth before he stood before everyone and pledged the rest of his life to someone who couldn’t even honestly do the same.

But what would that do to him? Elle rolled to her back and stared up at the dark ceiling. He’d been burned once and it had sent him into spiralling alcoholism for a year and a half. Elle scrubbed her face with her hands. This was getting her nowhere.

Sleep wouldn’t come. For close to an hour, she turned in her bed, rolling from one side to the other, uncomfortable no matter what she did. Her single bed suddenly felt so small - claustrophobic. With a huff she dragged her mattress to the floor and sprawled out over it, one foot pressed to the cool wood of the attic floor, the space heater warming the other side of her as it oscillated back and forth next to her. All the while that uncomfortable part of her mind kept poking her, the part that remembered how intently Brett watched her, like the whole world had narrowed down to just the two of them for a split second.

“It matters,” he had told her and that was enough to catch her breath in her lungs.

“Stop it,” she muttered to herself as she tried to settle into her floor mattress. “Stop getting all simper-y over a guy who’s already getting married.
